----------- Mom Made to Drink Own Breast Milk --------------

New York - A nursing mother boarding an airplane with her
infant daughter at Kennedy Airport was forced to drink her
own breast milk from three bottles she was bringing on board
with her. Security wanted to make sure the milk did not pose
any threat to other passengers. This procedure was within
federal guidelines at the time. The policy has since been
changed.

So what happened when the poor baby wanted to be fed? Jeesh!

Exactly! How the hell could a bottle of breast milk look like er, a fucking bomb? Those idiots on security need to go back to school or go and get their eyes tested. A bomb is a load of explosive material, electronics and a timer in a metal case for goodness sake!

Sorry to disappoint you DG, but bombs come in many varieties. It is not always the tnt incased in metal, there isn't always a timer, and it doesn't always say acmey on the side. The reason we take off our shoes at the airport is because a man tried to conceal a bomb in his shoe. The only reason he was caught was that Someone smelled him trying to strike the match. The liquids scare was because the security personal caught some people trying to smuggle flammable liquids onto a plane disguised as a bottle of pop. Where is the line, freedom verses safety. It is also the reason you must have your lap tops scanned separately. Is it too much, maybe, but is it too little, I think not? What might be too much is the woman who was forced to put her baby car seat through the scanner. The problem was the baby was still inside and the car seat got stuck in the X-ray machine. Before we go flying off the handle let me just say the woman didn't speak English. All the pointing and gesturing might have confused the woman. However, I can't believe that no one checked the car seat.

That's friggin stupid! Jeez, I would have been sooo pissed off and disgusted if were the mother.

Post 6 by Resonant (Find me alive.) on Sunday, 21-Jan-2007 9:07:34

So, did she have to drink a small amount of the milk, to prove it wasn't explosive or toxic, or did she have to drink all of it, in which case, it sounds like something out of Catch 22!

I can only say the terrorists have already won the psychological war, if this is the extent of paranoia in america

Erin I don't know if she had to drink it all, The article says that she had to drink some, however.

i'm sure she only had to take a little drink. She just had to prove it was fit for even her to take a sip of it.

it's a shame that society isn'ta bit more relaxed about women feeding their babies in public... If so, this wouldn't have even been necessary!

I'm with you danielle. I would have thrown it in their face. it's so rediculous!

Well, but here's the question. Is there any way to ensure that people don't bring flammable liquids onto the plane and/or other dangerous items without being so, well, i don't know? There msut be level where common sense would prevail, mustn't there? Hmmm...but I guess I could see where they were coming from.

Yeah, I do wish people would be a bit less weird about women who choose to discreetly feed their babies in public.

*thom3of5 makes a mental note not to bring a sperm sample on an airplane

Why did the mum express the breastmilk anyway? Couldn't she just discretely feed the baby in one of those baby carriers designed for that very purpose? Then, she wouldn't've been stopped from taking the bottles of milk on the plane because she didn't have any of her breastmilk in a bottle.

Post 16 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Monday, 22-Jan-2007 14:51:53

hang on maybe it's not the people around her that felt uncomfortable about her feeding the baby on the plane. Maybe this mom felt uncomfortable herself. so then you would still have this issue.

I was talking to my cousin the other day and she said if I want to breastfeed it would be best to get a pump and stuff...and it's like no? What's wrong with doing it the normal way? It is already the correct temperature and everything. If you pump it out then you have to refridgerate it, and then get it warm again and mess with bottles and junk. What's the point? I don't know why people in the US are so worried about having someone see them breast feed but yet they'll watch all kinds of crap on TV? Makes no sense.

Post 21 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Monday, 22-Jan-2007 17:51:19

hmm, lol. it's not only the us that is worried about people seeing others breast feed! It's all over the world. i have seen many people out doing it. it is just the personal preference. And you will have to at some point pump breast milk, unless you plan on never leaving your baby with someone else. you can't always be there to feed them. So yeah, a pump isn't a bad thing. my sister breast fed, and when my niece was with my mom or whoever she pumped so my niece would have a bottle in case she wasn't there in time. Smart plan if you ask me!

Well if I were a woman I keep the milk in the breast and let the passengers deal with that. It's natural, easier to carry around, and less trouble after feeding
By all means pump it up if you can be around, but if your around feed your child natural I say, and damn the looks. .
